One of the favorite past times here in the Lowcountry for residents and visitors alike is fishing! Here is some great information from one of the local experts. Check back with us every few months for the seasonal tips! Fishing in the Lowcountry in the Winter
In the winter months,(Oct-March) the main target for inshore fisherman are REDFISH and TROUT. With the temperatures dropping the water becomes "gin clear" and the redfish are easy to spot as well as easy to spook. You have to move around quietly when you have spotted a school of fishing, once they are on the move it makes it tough to get them to respond to you. Go out at low tide to incoming and explore the creeks and you may be pleasantly surprised at what you may find. I typically fish with artificial baits with the EXUDE RT SLUG and DART baits being my favorite, and always carrry a variety of colors to figure out what is working. What works one day might not work the next in the exact same spot. Another popular local favorite is the Electric chicken, It catches a lot of fish and has been a staple in my tackle box for many years. The temperatures are usually chilly in the early morning and warm up considerably during the day, dress in layers and be ready to peel them off. Just because it is cold outside, that doesn't mean the fish aren't biting, some of the best fishing Charleston has to offer is ahead of us in the next few months. If you have friends or family coming to town taking them out fishing is a great way to spend the day. Seeing the new bridge construction up close from the water can be exciting as well.
